World number three Carlos Alcaraz has officially withdrawn from the Madrid Open 2025 due to a troubling double injury just weeks before the French Open. The news has raised concerns among fans and tennis analysts as the young Spanish star battles to regain fitness in time for the Grand Slam season.
The injury concern originated during the Barcelona Open final earlier this month where Alcaraz faced off against Holger Rune. Despite his determination to make a comeback at the Madrid Open a tournament where he claimed titles in both 2022 and 2023 medical evaluations revealed more serious complications involving both his abductor muscle and another issue in his left leg.
Speaking from Madrid Alcaraz stated that he had been unable to train properly in recent days. During the Barcelona final his physiotherapist treated his abductor but he also started feeling discomfort in another area of his leg. Following tests on Tuesday he and his team made the difficult decision to skip the Madrid Open to avoid aggravating the injuries.
“I really wanted to compete here but we decided it was best not to take risks” said Alcaraz. “Madrid is one of the tournaments I always look forward to playing. We tried everything to be fit in time but my condition did not improve enough. The best decision was to rest and recover so I can return to the court at full strength.”
Alcaraz had received a bye into the second round where he was expected to face the winner of Zizou Bergs and Gabriel Diallo. In light of his withdrawal Polish player Kamil Majchrzak has now been added to the draw as his replacement.
There is also growing speculation that Alcaraz could miss the upcoming Italian Open scheduled for the first week of May though no official confirmation has been made regarding his participation.
Fans and tennis experts alike are hopeful that the 21-year-old phenom can recover in time for Roland Garros and continue his rise in the sport without further interruptions.
