In a surprising turn of events at the Italian Open 2025 world number two Iga Swiatek has been eliminated in the third round by American player Danielle Collins. The defending champion and three-time title winner at the Foro Italico was expected to make a strong run before the French Open but fell short in a straight-sets loss 6-1 7-5 on Saturday.
Swiatek known for her clay court dominance was seeking her fourth crown in Rome yet failed to find her rhythm against Collins. Despite having an 8-1 winning record against the American heading into the match Swiatek struggled to control the game and was broken four times in the first set alone.
Danielle Collins currently ranked 35th in the world delivered a powerful performance and now moves on to the round of 16 where she will face either Elina Svitolina or fellow American Hailey Baptiste. Collins is eyeing her second WTA 1000 title following her victory at the Miami Open last year.
This loss adds to Swiatek’s recent struggles on clay as she was also defeated in straight sets by Coco Gauff in the semi-finals of the Madrid Open earlier in May. Her lack of consistency and form has raised questions about her preparation for Roland Garros where she has claimed four Grand Slam titles in previous years.
Later in the tournament men’s world number one Jannik Sinner will return to competitive action as he takes on Argentina’s Mariano Navone following a three-month suspension related to a contested doping violation. Tennis fans around the world will be watching closely as the Italian aims to reassert his dominance in front of the home crowd.
