Tom Cruise is all set to return as Ethan Hunt in the final chapter of the Mission Impossible saga, and India is getting the first taste of this cinematic spectacle ahead of the rest of the world. Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning is scheduled to release in Indian cinemas on May 17, six days before it hits theatres in the United States. The anticipation surrounding the film is sky-high, and early indicators suggest it could become the highest-grossing Hollywood opening in India for 2025.
With fans eagerly waiting to bid farewell to one of action cinema’s most iconic characters, the advance booking numbers in India have already started breaking records. In the first 24 hours of pre-booking, over 12,000 tickets were sold across major multiplex chains, and with just one day to go before release, that figure has surged past 60,000 and is approaching the one-lakh mark. Interestingly, the Hindi-dubbed version alone has already outperformed several mid-budget Bollywood releases.
As per industry insiders, Mission Impossible 8 is currently tracking ahead of all Indian films released this year, apart from a handful of major blockbusters such as Chhaava Sikandar Game Changer L2 Empuraan and Good Bad Ugly. The film is even expected to surpass the opening of its predecessor Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning, which launched at ₹15 crore and collected a total of ₹110 crore in India. Current conservative estimates project an opening day collection of ₹20 crore net in India, while more bullish predictions go as high as ₹25 crore.
These figures are unprecedented for a Hollywood release in India this year. By comparison A Minecraft Movie debuted at ₹2 crore while Disney’s Snow White could only manage ₹65 lakh. Even Marvel’s offerings like Captain America Brave New World and Thunderbolts recorded lower openings at ₹4.3 crore and ₹3.85 crore respectively. Although Mission Impossible 8 may not break the all-time Hollywood opening day record set by Avatar The Way of Water at ₹40 crore in 2022, it is still on track to dominate this year’s international releases in the Indian market.
In comparison to Bollywood releases in 2025, Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning is projected to outdo some of the year’s biggest homegrown films. Akshay Kumar’s Kesari Chapter 2 earned ₹13 crore on its opening day, while Ajay Devgn’s Raid 2 made ₹19 crore and Sunny Deol’s Jaat took in ₹9 crore. Only Chhaava and Sikandar managed to achieve stronger openings.
Directed once again by Christopher McQuarrie, who has helmed every installment of the franchise since Rogue Nation, this eighth and final film was originally conceptualized as Dead Reckoning Part Two.
