Real Madrid legend Luka Modric has officially announced that he will leave the club following the conclusion of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. The Croatian midfield maestro shared the emotional news through an Instagram post on Thursday confirming that his last match at the iconic Santiago Bernabeu will take place this Saturday.
The 39-year-old who joined Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 has been an integral part of the club’s golden era. Over the past 13 years Modric has made close to 600 appearances in the white jersey scoring 43 goals and establishing himself as one of the most respected and decorated midfielders in football history.
“Every story has a beginning and an end. On Saturday I will play my final game at the Santiago Bernabeu” Modric wrote. “I am leaving with my heart full of pride and gratitude and with countless unforgettable moments. Even though I won’t wear the shirt anymore I will always be a Madridista.”
During his illustrious career at Real Madrid Modric has lifted 28 major trophies including six UEFA Champions League titles four La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey crowns. His remarkable contributions earned him the Ballon d’Or in 2018 after he led Croatia to a historic World Cup final in Russia.
Real Madrid confirmed Modric’s departure with a statement recognizing him as one of the club’s most iconic figures. The club praised him for embodying the spirit and values of Real Madrid both on and off the pitch. He is also the club’s ninth-highest appearance maker while his trophy haul makes him the most decorated player in the club’s 123-year history.
Club President Florentino Perez honored Modric by calling him a “unique and exemplary footballer” who captured the hearts of fans globally and left a lasting legacy at the Bernabeu.
Although Modric’s contract runs until June 30 2025 he may remain with the squad for a few extra days should Real Madrid progress beyond the group stages of the Club World Cup which ends on July 13. Regardless of the outcome fans are already preparing to say farewell to a true footballing icon who helped define an unforgettable era at Real Madrid.
