Summer commuting in Dubai is about to get significantly more comfortable as the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) rolls out major improvements to its public transportation facilities. With temperatures expected to climb above 40 degrees Celsius, the RTA has announced the installation of 893 upgraded air-conditioned bus shelters across 622 locations throughout the city to help keep passengers cool during the hottest months.
Although air-conditioned shelters have been a part of Dubai’s transport network since 2006, this large-scale upgrade ensures that the majority of bus stops across the emirate now provide a much-needed cool environment for waiting commuters. These shelters not only bring relief from the heat but also offer advanced features that enhance the overall commuting experience.
According to the RTA, the upgraded bus shelters were inspected and maintained beginning in March, and these efforts will continue into the second quarter of 2025. The shelters have been designed with an environmentally friendly structure that is more resilient to both heat and wind. They include designated spaces to support passengers with mobility needs, along with directional signage that clearly outlines Dubai’s extensive bus mobility network.
Each shelter is also equipped with modern display screens that offer real-time updates on bus arrival and departure times, enabling commuters to plan their journey efficiently. Shaikha Ahmad Al Shaikh, Director of Buildings and Facilities at the Corporate Administrative Support Services Sector of RTA, emphasized the importance of ongoing maintenance in delivering top-tier services to the public.
She stated that preventive maintenance plays a critical role in avoiding technical issues and maintaining consistent service quality. Site visits were conducted during both morning and evening hours to ensure optimal performance and to quickly resolve any emerging issues. The RTA also confirmed that all digital display systems were tested for accuracy and reliability.
In addition, dedicated teams have been deployed for continuous cleaning and sanitisation of the shelters in compliance with public health and safety regulations, reinforcing the city’s commitment to passenger well-being.
With these upgrades, Dubai continues to set the benchmark for comfort and innovation in public transportation, offering commuters a cooler and more convenient travel experience during the scorching summer months.
