Apple’s macOS 26 Expected to Be Named After California’s Scenic Lake Tahoe

Date:

Apple is gearing up to unveil its next major macOS update, reportedly called macOS 26 Tahoe, at the upcoming WWDC 2025 event starting June 9. Insider reports suggest that Apple has chosen the name Tahoe in tribute to the beautiful Lake Tahoe located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range of California. This lake is known for its clear waters reflecting the surrounding landscape, possibly inspiring the anticipated visual refresh of the operating system.

Since 2013, Apple has followed a tradition of naming macOS versions after notable Californian landmarks, beginning with macOS Mavericks. Last year’s release was named macOS Sequoia, after the famed national park. Now, with macOS Tahoe, Apple continues this trend while possibly signaling a shift in its naming strategy. Sources indicate that Apple may transition from sequential version numbers to using the release year in their OS names. This means future releases like iOS 26 and macOS 26 will reflect the year rather than the version iteration.

Additionally, macOS 26 Tahoe is expected to introduce new “glassy” design elements and visual features that aim to unify the user experience across Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads, and Apple’s visionOS platform. This move underscores Apple’s ongoing effort to create a seamless ecosystem with a modernized interface for all users.
