Shubman Gill Reflects on Leadership Lessons from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Ahead of His Captaincy Reign

Date:

As Team India enters a new era under Shubman Gill’s leadership, the young captain has opened up about the valuable experiences he gained while playing under the guidance of two legendary leaders—Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. With Rohit retiring from Test cricket ahead of the England tour and Virat Kohli also stepping away from red-ball duties, Gill has stepped into the spotlight at just 25 years of age to lead India into a transitional phase.

Speaking candidly in an interview with Sky Sports, Gill shared insights on how both captains shaped his understanding of leadership. He credited Virat Kohli for his proactive nature on the field and the ability to switch plans quickly to support bowlers during critical match situations. According to Gill, Kohli’s sharp thinking and clear communication stood out and made a strong impression on him during his formative years.

“When I played under Virat Bhai, what I really liked was his proactiveness, especially in Test cricket,” Gill said. “If a strategy wasn’t working, he would immediately change it and convey it clearly to the bowlers. That sense of alertness and quick thinking is something I’ve always admired.”

On the other hand, Gill described Rohit Sharma’s leadership style as deceptively calm but tactically aggressive. Although Rohit’s on-field demeanor might appear relaxed, Gill noted that his strategic planning and communication are exceptionally sharp.

“It might look like Rohit Bhai isn’t aggressive, but he really is when it comes to tactics,” Gill said. “He is very clear in communicating what he expects from players before, during, and after a series. His clarity gives players confidence.”

Gill also spoke about Rohit’s intense moments on the field, especially the viral stump-mic moments where Rohit’s passionate reactions captured fans’ attention. Despite his occasional outbursts, Gill emphasized that no one in the team takes it personally.

“Even if Rohit Bhai is swearing, it never feels offensive,” Gill explained. “That’s just his personality. Everyone knows it comes from a place of passion and is meant to uplift the team, not bring anyone down.”

With India scheduled to play a five-match Test series in England from June to August 2025—across iconic venues like Lord’s, Old Trafford, The Oval, Headingley, and Edgbaston—Gill will be tested not just as a captain but also as a top-order batter. His recent overseas form has faced scrutiny, making this series a defining chapter in his career.
