Lionel Messi’s Goal Streak Snapped as Inter Miami Crushed 3-0 by Cincinnati in MLS Clash

Date:

Inter Miami’s impressive momentum in Major League Soccer came to a screeching halt on Wednesday night as they suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of FC Cincinnati, bringing an end to Lionel Messi’s phenomenal five-game streak of multiple-goal matches.

For weeks, Messi defied expectations by scoring braces in five consecutive MLS appearances, setting a new league record. However, the 38-year-old Argentine icon was effectively neutralized by Cincinnati’s well-organized defense throughout the full 90 minutes at TQL Stadium. Inter Miami could barely trouble Cincinnati goalkeeper Roman Celentano, managing just two shots on target that lacked real threat.

Messi’s record-setting run had been a catalyst in lifting Miami to fifth in the Eastern Conference, earning them four wins and a draw. He still sits at the top of the MLS goal-scoring chart with 16 goals in 17 matches, tied for the lead.

But against Cincinnati, it was the hosts who dominated from the outset. Midfielder Gerardo Valenzuela opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a precise left-footed shot—marking his fifth goal of the season. Brazilian striker Evander then extended the lead with goals in the 50th and 70th minutes, completing a commanding performance by the Ohio side.

Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano admitted post-match that his side was outclassed in every department. “We struggled to win individual duels, possibly due to the physical toll of our recent schedule,” said Mascherano. He also addressed concerns over Messi, revealing that the superstar suffered a minor knock late in the game but assured it was not serious.

This loss ended Miami’s five-match unbeaten streak. The club now holds a record of 11 wins, 4 defeats, and 5 draws, trailing conference leaders Philadelphia by eight points. However, Inter Miami still has three games in hand, keeping their playoff hopes strong.

Mascherano expressed concern over the performance, emphasizing the need to recover and focus on the next fixture. “We weren’t fresh or sharp today, and Cincinnati took full advantage. The result worries us, but we’ll bounce back,” he stated.

Inter Miami’s next test arrives on Saturday with an away match against the New York Red Bulls.

In transfer updates, reports suggest that Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul is set to join Inter Miami on loan from Atlético Madrid for the remainder of the season. The deal, rumored to include a $12 million purchase option, could help persuade Messi to extend his contract, which is currently due to expire at the end of 2025. Reuniting with De Paul—his fellow World Cup winner—might be a strategic move by the club as they look to strengthen both on and off the pitch.
