Huawei Mate XT 2 Leak Hints at New Colour Choices and Advanced Tri-Fold Features Ahead of September Launch

Date:

Huawei appears to be preparing to launch the Mate XT 2, its second-generation tri-fold smartphone, later this year. The device, reportedly codenamed ‘Greenlan’, is expected to be unveiled in China this September. The Mate XT 2 is tipped to become the world’s second mass-produced tri-fold handset, following the debut of the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design which arrived in 2024.

According to a tipster on Weibo, the upcoming Mate XT 2 will offer more colour options compared to its predecessor. While the first model launched in just two shades — Dark Black and Rui Red — the new device is expected to arrive in four vibrant colours including black purple red and white. These expanded colour variants are part of Huawei’s strategy to appeal to a broader customer base as the company ramps up production volumes.

The Huawei Mate XT 2 is anticipated to bring several upgrades. While the design and battery may remain similar to the original model, the smartphone is rumoured to be powered by the new Kirin 9020 chipset — a step ahead of the Kirin 9010 used in the previous edition. Additionally, enhancements are expected in camera hardware, including a new 50MP primary camera with a variable aperture and a refined periscope telephoto lens. The handset may also offer support for satellite communication.

Earlier reports suggest that Huawei has already applied for regulatory certification for the tri-fold device, listed under model number GRL-AL20. A global release might follow the Chinese launch. The Mate XT 2 will likely rival Samsung’s upcoming tri-fold phone in the premium foldable segment.

Huawei’s first tri-fold phone, the Mate XT Ultimate Design, launched in September 2024, remains the only commercially available tri-fold device to date. It was introduced at a price of CNY 19999 (approximately Rs 235900) for the variant featuring 16GB RAM and 256GB storage. With enhanced specifications and increased production, Huawei aims to position the Mate XT 2 as a breakthrough in foldable technology.
