In a gripping finale to the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, England emerged victorious once again, edging out Spain 3-1 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time. The Lionesses, defending their European crown, showed immense resilience and strategic brilliance to retain their title.
Spain initially took control with Mariona Caldentey finding the net in the 25th minute, capitalizing on Ona Batlle’s precise cross. However, England responded with determination. Just over half an hour later, in the 57th minute, Alessia Russo equalized with a powerful header from a Chloe Kelly cross, sending the match into extra time and ultimately a penalty showdown.
In the shootout, Chloe Kelly calmly fired in the decisive penalty, while goalkeeper Hannah Hampton played a heroic role by stopping spot kicks from Caldentey and Aitana Bonmati. Spain’s substitute Salma Paralluelo added to their heartbreak by sending her shot wide.
This final showcased England’s consistent tournament strategy – battling back after setbacks and depending on impactful substitutions. They had previously followed the same pattern to knock out Italy and Sweden during the knockout stages.
Though Spain had only trailed for a mere four minutes throughout the entire competition and never during regulation time in the final, they failed to secure their first ever European title. Meanwhile, Chloe Kelly, who famously netted the winning goal in the Women’s Euro 2022 final against Germany, once again rose to the occasion and delivered when it mattered most.
With this hard-fought triumph, England continues to cement its legacy as a dominant force in European women’s football.
