Neuroscientist Reveals 3 Common Drinks That Can Harm Your Brain Health – One May Surprise You

Date:

A leading brain health expert has issued a strong warning to avoid three widely consumed drinks that could be silently damaging your brain. Dr. Rober WB Love, a neuroscientist known for his work in Alzheimer’s disease prevention, shared his advice in an Instagram post on August 7, explaining how these beverages can affect memory, sleep, and long-term cognitive health.

He said that while many people drink these without a second thought, the long-term effects can be serious — and one of them is often mistaken for a healthy choice.

1. Alcohol
According to Dr. Love, alcohol has been a topic of debate for years, but current research now shows that it can severely harm brain health. Although earlier studies suggested potential heart benefits, new findings highlight its negative impact on brain function. Alcohol consumption can impair memory, disrupt sleep, and damage gut health — and because gut health is closely linked to brain health, these effects can have long-term consequences.

2. Sugary Soda
Soda loaded with added sugar is another major culprit. Dr. Love explained that high sugar intake without fibre causes rapid spikes in blood sugar and insulin, triggering inflammation in the body. This inflammation not only accelerates aging but is also a significant risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. He also noted that diet sodas may be even worse due to artificial sweeteners, which large-scale studies have linked to a higher risk of type 2 diabetes.

3. Tap Water Containing Fluoride
Perhaps the most surprising entry on the list is tap water. Many believe it is a healthy choice, but Dr. Love warns that fluoride — commonly found in tap water — can harm brain development. He cited research from China showing that children exposed to fluoride tend to have lower IQs. While fluoride may help protect teeth, he advises avoiding ingesting it. Instead, he recommends reverse osmosis or distilled water, especially for young children.

Dr. Love concluded by noting that even U.S. states like Utah are reviewing policies on water fluoridation due to potential health risks.
