PSG Clinches UEFA Super Cup 2025 After Late Comeback and Penalty Shootout Win Over Tottenham

Date:

Paris Saint-Germain secured their fifth trophy of 2025 with a thrilling victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Super Cup, held at Stadio Friuli in Udine. The French champions staged an incredible late comeback, overturning a 2-0 deficit in the final minutes before triumphing in a tense penalty shootout.

Tottenham seemed poised for an upset after Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero put them ahead, with Romero’s header coming just after halftime. PSG’s new goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, making his debut after joining from Lille to replace Gianluigi Donnarumma, endured a mixed evening—denying some key chances but also conceding twice, including a rebound effort from Van de Ven in the first half.

However, Luis Enrique’s side refused to give in. Lee Kang-in ignited the comeback with a precise low strike in the 85th minute, and Gonçalo Ramos headed home Ousmane Dembélé’s cross deep into stoppage time to level the match at 2-2.

The penalty shootout saw Spurs take an early advantage after Vitinha’s miss, but Van de Ven and Mathys Tel both failed from the spot. PSG converted their remaining attempts, with Nuno Mendes slamming home the decisive kick to seal the win.

Luis Enrique praised his squad’s resilience, noting that they had only been back in training for six days following a packed season that included a Champions League, Ligue 1, and Coupe de France treble. The victory adds to their 2025 trophy haul, which also includes the Trophée des Champions.

For Tottenham’s new manager Thomas Frank, it was an encouraging debut despite the heartbreak. Taking over from Ange Postecoglou, Frank saw his side execute a near-perfect tactical plan, showing determination and organization. While the result slipped away, the performance offered a solid foundation for the upcoming season.
