Manchester United Denied Late Penalty as Arsenal Secure Victory Amid Refereeing Controversy at Old Trafford

Date:

Arsenal claimed an important Premier League win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, but the clash ended in controversy after the referee waved away a strong penalty appeal in the closing minutes.

The new Premier League season kicked off with drama across the fixtures, as Liverpool produced a late comeback against Bournemouth, Chelsea were held to a frustrating draw by Crystal Palace, and Arsenal managed to leave Old Trafford with all three points.

Arsenal took the lead in the 13th minute when Riccardo Calafiori capitalized on an error from United’s stand-in goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. Declan Rice’s corner was misjudged by Bayindir after being challenged by William Saliba, allowing Calafiori to head into the net.

The major talking point arrived late in the second half when Matheus Cunha appeared to be brought down inside the penalty area by Arsenal defender William Saliba. Replays suggested Saliba made little contact with the ball and instead tripped Cunha, but the referee ignored Manchester United’s appeals, leaving players and fans stunned.

United’s coaching staff also questioned Arsenal’s opener, claiming that Saliba obstructed Bayindir during the set-piece. “Players are touching the goalkeeper without the intention of going for the ball. That should not be allowed,” explained United boss Amorim after the match.

He further defended his decision to rest Andre Onana, stating, “I didn’t drop Onana, but he had only one week of training and no match fitness. Altay and Tom had done well in pre-season, so they were given the chance.”

Despite the defeat, Amorim praised his squad’s performance. “We showed today that Manchester United can compete with any Premier League side. We were the better team for long periods, and I am proud of the players.”

Arsenal’s win ensures a strong start to their campaign, while Manchester United will feel hard done by as the debate over VAR and refereeing decisions once again takes center stage in English football.
