Blood Moon to Shine Over Dubai Tonight After Spectacular Lunar Eclipse

Date:

Skygazers in the UAE have another chance to witness a breathtaking cosmic display as the blood moon continues to illuminate the skies over Dubai tonight, Monday, September 8, 2025. Following the total lunar eclipse on Sunday evening, residents can still catch the reddish glow of the moon as Earth’s shadow lingers.

A blood moon occurs during a total lunar eclipse when the Earth positions itself between the sun and the moon, blocking direct sunlight and casting a reddish tint across the lunar surface. While the eclipse reached its peak last night, the reddish-hued moon remains visible wherever skies are clear.

Observers across Dubai and the UAE can enjoy the celestial event with the naked eye, though a telescope or binoculars will enhance the view, highlighting the moon’s distinct phases: penumbral, partial, total, and back again. The full lunar eclipse cycle lasts for several hours, with the total phase typically visible for 30 minutes to an hour.

The Dubai Astronomy Group streamed the event live on Sunday, offering stunning real-time footage of the moon passing into Earth’s shadow. For those eager to head outdoors, several prime stargazing destinations in the UAE promise unforgettable views.

Top blood moon viewing spots in the UAE:

  • Al Sadeem Astronomy Centre, Abu Dhabi – Located in Al Wathbah, this observatory offers guided night sky tours and telescope access. Tickets are Dhs300 for adults and Dhs100 for kids (advance booking required).
  • Al Quaa Milky Way Spot – About 90 minutes from Abu Dhabi towards Al Ain, this open desert location offers clear skies ideal for stargazing. Free entry, but a 4×4 is required.
  • Shuweihat Island – A stunning natural escape about four hours from Dubai, offering salt flats, serene beaches, and spectacular night skies. Best accessed with a 4×4 vehicle.
  • Hatta – Nestled in the Hajar Mountains, Hatta provides stargazing opportunities along with hiking, camping, and adventure activities. However, some light pollution may affect visibility.

With the skies set to remain clear, tonight’s blood moon is a must-see for astronomy enthusiasts and casual sky watchers alike.
