Gareth Southgate Celebrates Euro 2024 Semifinal Victory Amidst Criticism: “We All Want to Be Loved”

Date:

Gareth Southgate has endured relentless criticism throughout Euro 2024 as England’s manager. However, reaching the final could reignite the support and admiration of England’s fans.

In a thrilling semifinal match, England defeated the Netherlands 2-1. Southgate’s team adopted a more open and attacking style, a shift from his typically cautious approach. His bold decision to substitute captain Harry Kane for Ollie Watkins proved decisive, as Watkins scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner.

“We all want to be loved, right? When you’re representing your country and you take pride in being English, it’s tough to face constant criticism,” Southgate expressed, acknowledging the significance of celebrating a second final after Euro 2020. He paid tribute to the loyal England fans who traveled to support the team.

“If I hadn’t been on the pitch, I would have been in the stands celebrating like them. We share a connection, but as the manager, I have to make the tough decisions. Providing the fans with a night like tonight is incredibly special.”

Once adored by fans and recognized for reconnecting England with its supporters, Southgate faced a backlash following the penalty shootout loss to Italy in the Euro 2020 final. His cautious tactics were questioned as England couldn’t maintain their early lead.

At Euro 2024, England’s journey to the semifinals included some challenging matches. Against Slovakia in the round of 16 and Switzerland in the quarterfinals, England struggled to create chances but managed to score crucial late goals that kept their tournament hopes alive.

Southgate’s bold experiment of playing right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold in central midfield during the 1-0 win over Serbia and the 1-1 draw with Denmark received mixed reviews.

England now faces Spain in the final on Sunday, just one victory away from their first men’s trophy since the 1966 World Cup. “The sole reason I took this job was to bring success to England and improve English football. Reaching our first final on foreign soil fills me with immense pride,” Southgate stated.

“We’re up against the best team in the tournament and have one day less to prepare. It’s a monumental challenge, but we’re still here, and we’re ready to fight.”
