Suryakumar Yadav Clarifies India’s No Handshake with Pakistan in Asia Cup 2025 – Decision Came from Higher Authorities

Date:

India’s Asia Cup 2025 clash against Pakistan ended not only with a seven-wicket victory but also with a bold political statement as Team India opted against exchanging handshakes with their opponents. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav confirmed after the match that the decision was not a personal choice but came directly from the BCCI and the Indian government in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 innocent lives.

At the toss, Suryakumar Yadav deliberately avoided contact with Pakistan’s captain Salman Agha, choosing not to shake hands or exchange pleasantries. After securing the win with a slog-swept six, India’s players immediately walked toward their dressing room, refusing to follow the customary handshake tradition. The move mirrored Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina’s long-standing refusal to shake hands with Russian or Belarusian athletes during the ongoing war, as a mark of protest.

This unusual break from sporting convention left Pakistan’s players visibly unsettled. Agha retaliated by skipping the post-match presentation, while the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) lodged a formal protest with match referee Andy Pycroft. PCB officials alleged that the captains had been advised against handshakes during the toss.

Speaking to the media, Suryakumar Yadav clarified India’s stance: “Our government and BCCI were aligned on this decision. We came here to play cricket, but some things go beyond sport. We dedicate this win to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and our armed forces who carried out Operation Sindoor. Their sacrifice inspires us, and this was our way of showing solidarity.”

Throughout the high-voltage game in Dubai, both teams maintained a strict distance from one another. There was no sledging, no friendly chatter, and no celebrations involving rivals. The only minor interaction occurred when Pakistan’s Faheem Ashraf returned the ball to India’s Kuldeep Yadav at the non-striker’s end.

Pakistan’s coach Mike Hesson voiced disappointment after the match, saying, “We were ready to shake hands. It was unfortunate the opposition did not respond. It wasn’t the ending we expected.”

The incident has sparked strong reactions in both nations, with many hailing India’s stand as a show of solidarity while others debate the politicization of sport. Analysts believe the final word has not been spoken yet, as the BCCI may be required to clarify the sequence of decisions. For now, India’s statement is clear — cricket is important, but standing with victims of terrorism is a greater priority.
