Mumbai: Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal has answered his critics in the best way possible — on the court. Playing in the Davis Cup World Group I tie in Biel, Switzerland, Nagal secured back-to-back singles victories to guide India to a historic 3-1 triumph over the ninth-seeded hosts. The 28-year-old’s emphatic wins have not only lifted India to one of its biggest Davis Cup victories in decades but also silenced doubts over his commitment to the national team.
This was Nagal’s first Davis Cup appearance since September 2023, following an extended absence that often overshadowed the ties themselves. His absence, particularly during India’s 4-0 defeat in Sweden in 2024, drew criticism from both federation officials and former players. At the time, the All India Tennis Association (AITA) alleged that Nagal “refused to play” despite competing in other tournaments. Nagal, however, clarified that a back injury forced him to withdraw and that he had informed the federation well in advance.
“I’ve always been motivated to play for India, but sometimes injuries or circumstances don’t allow it,” Nagal said after his victories. “I just hope people who were pointing fingers at me now see that I’ve always given my best whenever I’ve represented my country.”
Nagal’s two wins in straight sets came against Marc-Andrea Huesler and Henry Bernet, backing up debutant Dhakshineswar Suresh’s remarkable opening-day victory. Although India dropped the doubles match, Nagal sealed the tie on Saturday, ensuring India’s place in next year’s Davis Cup Qualifiers.
The last time India defeated a European nation in Europe was back in 1993 when Leander Paes and Ramesh Krishnan starred against France. Nagal’s performance has now added a fresh chapter to India’s Davis Cup legacy.
Reflecting on the tie, Nagal credited Suresh’s fearless debut for setting the tone: “Starting 2-0 changes the mindset. It gives you freedom and confidence, and that’s what happened here.”
India’s captain Rohit Rajpal praised Nagal’s return to the squad and hinted at improved communication moving forward. Nagal confirmed that he had a constructive chat with Rajpal, emphasizing the importance of professionalism and respect in team matters.
Currently ranked 290th after reaching a career-high of 68 last year, Nagal sees this success as a potential turning point for his season. “These matches can change the next few months for me. If we keep improving individually, the team will grow stronger too,” he added.
