James Gunn’s Superman to Stream on HBO Max from September 19 After Box Office Success

Date:

DC fans who missed James Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman movie in theaters won’t have to wait much longer. Warner Bros. and DC Studios have confirmed that the film will be available for streaming exclusively on HBO Max starting Friday, September 19, 2025.

The new Superman opened in cinemas on July 11 and quickly soared at the global box office. The film earned an impressive $125 million domestically during its opening weekend and went on to collect $615 million worldwide, making it the top-grossing comic book movie of the year so far. For two consecutive weeks, Superman held the No. 1 position worldwide before Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps took the lead.

Directed and written by James Gunn, the movie holds special importance as it officially launches the rebooted DC Universe. Together with producer Peter Safran, Gunn is reshaping DC Studios with an interconnected storytelling approach that unites films and television series under one vision.

This marks Warner Bros.’ second attempt at creating a unified superhero timeline after the earlier DC Extended Universe, which began with Man of Steel in 2013 and concluded quietly last year. With David Corenswet taking on the iconic role of Superman, the film has been praised for its fresh take on the legendary hero while blending action, heart, and comic-inspired visuals.

Fans who couldn’t catch the theatrical run—or those ready for a second viewing—will now get the chance to stream the movie at home on HBO Max beginning September 19. The release signals a major step in DC’s ambitious new era, setting the stage for more interconnected stories featuring beloved characters.
