Kylian Mbappe’s Brace Inspires Real Madrid to Champions League Win Over Marseille

Date:

Real Madrid earned a 2-1 victory over Marseille in the UEFA Champions League, with Kylian Mbappe once again proving why he is the heartbeat of Los Blancos. The French forward scored twice from the penalty spot to overturn an early setback, though Dani Carvajal’s red card in the second half added a sour note to an otherwise important win.

Inside the first two minutes, Mbappe nearly produced a stunning scissors-kick that brought the Santiago Bernabéu crowd to its feet. While the attempt didn’t hit the net, it set the tone for his commanding display. He finished the night with 10 shots, five on target, and a brace that took his Real Madrid tally to 50 goals in 64 matches. At just 26 years old, he has now scored 57 Champions League goals across three clubs, cementing his place among the all-time greats.

Mbappe’s influence goes beyond statistics. He is the focal point of Real Madrid’s Galacticos 2.0 project alongside Vinicius Jr, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo. While not the official captain, he has emerged as a leader through his performances and mentality. Xabi Alonso, Madrid’s new head coach, praised Mbappe for his intensity and personality, highlighting his importance to the team’s structure both in attack and defense.

Marseille briefly silenced the Bernabéu in the 22nd minute when Tim Weah scored after Mason Greenwood won possession. But Mbappe quickly restored parity, converting a penalty after Rodrygo was fouled. His second spot-kick in the 72nd minute sealed the win after Facundo Medina’s handball in the box, with the Frenchman’s powerful strike beating Gerónimo Rulli despite the keeper’s touch.

Carvajal’s red card, however, leaves Madrid with concerns at the back, especially with Antonio Rüdiger injured and Trent Alexander-Arnold also struggling with fitness. Depth in defense will be tested heavily in the coming weeks. Real Madrid have shown resilience, winning three games in 2025-26 while reduced to 10 men, but the strain could become significant as the season progresses.

Mbappe’s brilliance overshadowed the challenges, reminding fans why he is already regarded as a modern legend. His hunger, consistency, and leadership continue to push Real Madrid forward in their pursuit of European glory.
