Cardiologist Explains Broken Heart Syndrome Signs That Can Mimic Heart Attacks

Date:

If you experience sudden chest pain or shortness of breath, it may feel like a heart attack—but there’s a temporary and reversible condition known as Broken Heart Syndrome that can produce similar symptoms. Also called stress-induced cardiomyopathy or Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, this condition weakens the heart muscle temporarily, making it harder for the heart to pump blood.

Dr Rahul Chhabria, Associate Director of Emergency Cardiology at Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre, explained that while heart attack occurs due to blocked arteries, Broken Heart Syndrome arises from extreme emotional or physical stress, often without underlying heart disease. Its hallmark is rapid onset following events such as the death of a loved one, breakups, severe anger, excitement, major medical illness, or surgery.

The condition is more commonly observed in women over 50. Symptoms can mimic heart failure, including breathlessness, palpitations, swelling of the legs, and chest pain. The left ventricle of the heart changes shape, resembling a Japanese octopus trap called a “takotsubo,” which reduces the heart’s pumping ability temporarily.

Although alarming, Broken Heart Syndrome is typically reversible with proper monitoring. Dr Chhabria emphasizes the importance of stress management, noting that emotional and physical stress can significantly affect heart function. Anyone experiencing sudden chest discomfort or breathlessness should still seek immediate medical attention to rule out a true heart attack.
