Perplexity has made its AI-powered Comet Browser accessible to all users for free, removing previous restrictions tied to invites or subscriptions. Initially launched in July exclusively for Perplexity Max subscribers, the Comet browser is now available on Windows and Mac, with mobile apps in development and pre-registration open on Google Play.
The Comet browser integrates a Chromium-based engine with Perplexity’s AI search capabilities, providing users with a smart sidebar assistant that can summarise content, analyse multiple web pages, and even perform agentic actions. The AI assistant can assist with tasks such as booking meetings, sending emails, and helping with online purchases, while maintaining context across open tabs.
Users can interact directly with the AI by clicking the sidebar, and it can automatically identify relevant information on web pages. For example, on e-commerce sites, the AI assistant can find faster shipping options, compare prices, and guide users through the checkout process. Sensitive tasks such as payments require user authorization, ensuring security while enhancing convenience.
Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas announced the general availability of the Comet browser on X, highlighting its agentic capabilities and integration with Perplexity’s search engine. With its AI features, Comet aims to redefine web browsing by combining intelligent search, productivity tools, and enhanced user experience in a single platform.
