A 55-year-old man recently experienced sudden slurred speech and weakness during breakfast, highlighting the urgent need for recognizing stroke symptoms. Dr Rahul Chawla, a neurologist trained at AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospitals, emphasized that timely medical intervention is critical for survival and reducing long-term disability.
Strokes can affect people of all ages, and even younger adults and celebrities have shared their experiences. For instance, Hailey Bieber, wife of Justin Bieber, suffered a mini-stroke caused by a small blood clot but recovered quickly. A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is blocked or interrupted, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and essential nutrients, which can lead to permanent damage if untreated.
Dr Chawla, who holds top All India ranks in AIIMS and PMT, shared insights from treating thousands of stroke patients, stressing that awareness of early symptoms can save lives. In the cited case, the man’s family delayed seeking treatment for seven hours, missing the critical “golden window.” While the patient survived, he now relies on others for daily activities.
Key stroke warning signs include sudden weakness, slurred speech, facial droop, sudden vision loss, and imbalance. The “golden window” for effective clot-busting treatment (tPA) is 4.5 hours. Beyond this, the chances of reversing brain damage diminish, with 2 million brain cells dying every minute during a stroke, according to the American Stroke Association.
Preventive measures are equally important. Dr Chawla recommends controlling blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes, quitting smoking, exercising daily, and reducing salt intake to lower the risk of stroke. Prompt recognition and immediate medical attention remain the most crucial steps in saving lives and minimizing lifelong disability.
