The ongoing tension within Indian cricket appears to have reached a critical point, with Ajit Agarkar, the BCCI chief selector, reportedly under pressure due to growing differences with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The situation intensified after Shubman Gill was named India’s new ODI captain, signaling a possible shift in leadership and long-term planning for the national team.
Agarkar has faced heavy criticism from fans following the decision to replace Rohit Sharma and the uncertainty surrounding Virat Kohli’s participation in the upcoming World Cup in South Africa. Both Kohli and Rohit, who earlier retired from Tests and T20Is, had expressed a strong desire to feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup, but recent developments suggest a change in plans as selectors reportedly want them to prove form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Former England pacer Steve Harmison recently shared his opinion on the matter, hinting that Agarkar could face a turbulent end to his tenure. Speaking on talkSPORT Cricket, Harmison said, “Unfortunately, I think there might be a messy end for Ajit Agarkar. If anyone wins this battle, it might be the former captains rather than the former all-rounder. It depends on whether Agarkar is doing this to challenge Kohli and Sharma to come back stronger.”
The remarks have sparked debate across cricket circles, with many recalling Kohli’s exceptional performance during the Champions Trophy, where he scored a century against Pakistan and another crucial knock in the semifinal against Australia. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma rediscovered form in the final with a match-winning innings against New Zealand, helping India clinch their second ICC title in less than a year.
Harmison also pointed out that Kohli’s influence in 50-over cricket remains unmatched, suggesting that sidelining him could hurt India in key situations. “Virat Kohli has runs, reputation, and legacy in ODIs. Rohit is older and hasn’t been as dominant in recent 50-over matches. If you leave Kohli out and then struggle in big chases, you’ll realize what’s missing,” he said.
The ongoing transition phase for the Indian ODI team has raised questions about leadership, selection consistency, and long-term planning. As the spotlight intensifies, Ajit Agarkar’s position as chief selector could be at risk, with fans and experts awaiting clarity before the upcoming Australia series and the World Cup squad announcement.
