Apple has taken a major step toward expanding in-car entertainment by adding AirPlay video support to CarPlay with the iOS 26.4 beta update for iPhone. The new capability allows users to stream video content directly from their iPhone to a compatible car display, offering a richer multimedia experience while maintaining safety restrictions.
The feature was discovered after Apple updated its official CarPlay developer documentation, confirming long-standing rumours about video playback support. According to the updated guide, AirPlay video in CarPlay enables users to watch videos on the vehicle’s infotainment screen only when the car is parked. Playback is automatically restricted while driving, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
Instead of adding native video apps to CarPlay, Apple is relying on AirPlay technology to mirror video content from the iPhone to the car’s display. This approach keeps CarPlay lightweight while still unlocking new entertainment options for drivers and passengers during stops or charging breaks.
Apple has also clarified that the feature will not be available on all vehicles by default. Automakers will need to integrate CarPlay with AirPlay video support into their infotainment systems, meaning availability will depend on hardware compatibility and manufacturer adoption.
The iOS 26.4 update remains in beta and has not yet been released to the public. Alongside AirPlay video, Apple is also expanding CarPlay’s app ecosystem by allowing voice-based conversational AI apps. These apps must launch with voice as their primary interaction method and respond intelligently to user requests, further enhancing hands-free usability inside vehicles.
Together, these updates signal Apple’s broader vision of turning CarPlay into a more capable and flexible in-car platform while continuing to prioritise safety.
