Are Instant Noodles Really Your Comfort Food? Mumbai Surgeon Warns How Regular Consumption Can Harm Your Health

Date:

Instant noodles may feel like the quickest solution to hunger, offering taste, warmth, and convenience in just a few minutes, but their easy appeal hides concerning health risks. While they have become a daily staple for students and busy professionals, experts caution that frequent consumption of these ultra-processed foods can negatively impact long-term wellness.

Dr. Manan Vora, a well-known Mumbai orthopaedic surgeon, health educator, and co-founder of NutriByte Wellness, recently shared a detailed warning about the hidden dangers of eating instant noodles too often. In a video posted on December 1, he reminds viewers that enjoying them occasionally is not harmful, but making them a regular part of one’s diet can gradually damage overall health. He urges people to prioritise whole, unprocessed foods to protect gut health, energy levels, and long-term wellbeing.

According to Dr. Vora, instant noodles offer “instant satisfaction but long-term harm,” especially popular options like spicy Buldak ramen, which have become a trend among younger consumers. He highlights three major red-flag ingredients commonly found in these products—each contributing to digestive issues, inflammation, and unnecessary chemical exposure.

One of these ingredients is TBHQ (Tertiary Butylhydroquinone), a synthetic preservative used to prevent fats and oils in packaged foods from spoiling. Dr. Vora explains that regular intake of TBHQ can contribute to oxidative stress and add an avoidable burden on the body.

He also raises concerns about the polystyrene containers used for many cup noodles. When hot water is poured into these cups, microplastics can leach into the food. These particles may enter the digestive system, increasing inflammation and irritating the gut over time.

Finally, instant noodles are packed with artificial colours, flavour enhancers, and MSG (monosodium glutamate), which are designed to make the noodles taste irresistibly good. Dr. Vora explains that these additives stimulate cravings, making the product addictive while offering minimal nutritional value. Since instant noodles are engineered primarily for long shelf life rather than nourishment, relying on them regularly can undermine overall health.
