In a dramatic turn of events at the Asia Cup 2025, India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav stunned commentators and fans when he withdrew an appeal against UAE batter Junaid Siddique during the Group A clash at the Dubai International Stadium on Wednesday.
The moment occurred in the 13th over when Shivam Dube bowled a sharp bouncer. As Siddique backed away, he pointed towards a towel that had slipped from Dube while charging in. In the middle of the distraction, Sanju Samson executed a sharp throw to the stumps, and third umpire replays confirmed Siddique was short of the crease. The big screen flashed OUT, but Suryakumar chose to revoke the appeal, citing the spirit of the game since the batter was distracted by the towel mishap.
Although his gesture drew applause from some fans, not everyone was convinced. Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar criticized the decision, saying the towel had nothing to do with the dismissal and that India was simply trying to be lenient toward the inexperienced UAE side.
However, the withdrawal had little impact on the outcome of the game. UAE collapsed for just 57 runs inside 14 overs, their lowest-ever T20I score against India. Kuldeep Yadav (4/7) and Shivam Dube (3/4) dismantled the batting lineup, while Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakaravarthy, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel kept up the pressure throughout.
India’s chase was a formality. Abhishek Sharma top-scored with 30, while Shubman Gill (20*) and Suryakumar Yadav (7*) sealed a nine-wicket win with a massive 93 balls to spare. The victory underlined India’s dominance and left fans debating whether Suryakumar’s decision reflected sportsmanship or unnecessary pity for the opposition.
Team India also made notable selection calls with Sanju Samson chosen as the wicketkeeper over Jitesh Sharma, and Shivam Dube preferred ahead of Rinku Singh. Interestingly, India fielded only one frontline pacer in the form of Jasprit Bumrah, yet the bowling unit had more than enough firepower to crush the hosts.
This incident and its aftermath have sparked conversations about the fine balance between competitive spirit and sportsmanship in modern cricket.
