A Europa League night at Villa Park turned chaotic as Aston Villa’s match against Young Boys was interrupted by crowd disorder coming from the away section. The tension escalated shortly after Donyell Malen scored Villa’s opening goal in the 27th minute, when he was struck on the head by a plastic cup thrown from the visiting fans. The impact caused a small cut and visible bleeding, although the forward continued without needing medical treatment.
The situation worsened after Malen doubled the lead in the 42nd minute, prompting more objects to be thrown onto the pitch. Match officials halted play for more than five minutes as Young Boys captain Loris Benito rushed to the stands in an attempt to calm supporters. Several seats were torn out and thrown onto the pitch as security and police worked to restore order. Despite the disruption, Aston Villa secured a 2-1 victory.
Following the match, Villa manager Unai Emery confirmed Malen was fine and praised the Dutchman’s ongoing improvement, highlighting his growing fitness and contribution in front of goal. Emery also reflected on the team’s performance, stressing the importance of maintaining concentration and balance in the Europa League campaign.
Young Boys manager Gerardo Seoane publicly apologised for the incident, acknowledging that fans overreacted and emphasising that such behavior does not reflect the values the club wants to uphold while playing away.
