Authentic Sri Lankan Pol Roti Recipe with Coconut and Green Chilies

Sri Lankan Pol Roti is a traditional flatbread enjoyed for breakfast lunch or dinner across Sri Lanka. This vegetarian-friendly recipe is simple to prepare yet rich in flavour featuring freshly grated coconut spicy green chilies aromatic curry leaves and soft flour dough. The combination of tropical coconut and mild spices makes it a perfect comfort food for any time of the day.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (maida)
  • 2 to 3 green chilies finely chopped
  • 1 cup freshly grated coconut
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • A handful of fresh curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed
  • Oil or ghee for cooking

Method:

  1. In a mixing bowl combine grated coconut chopped green chilies onions curry leaves and salt. Mix well then gently squeeze out any excess moisture.
  2. Add the flour to the mixture and slowly incorporate water to form a smooth dough. Knead for about 2 to 3 minutes and let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. Lightly oil your hands divide the dough into equal-sized portions and flatten each ball into a round disc using your fingers.
  4. Heat a tawa or skillet on low-medium flame place the flattened dough and cook until each side turns golden brown and slightly crisp. Drizzle with ghee if desired for extra flavour.
  5. Repeat with remaining dough portions. Serve the Sri Lankan Pol Roti hot with coconut sambol chutney or curry for a delicious meal.
