James Cameron’s much-anticipated sci-fi spectacle Avatar Fire and Ash has faced its first noticeable slowdown at the global box office. After a modest opening in North America, the third chapter of the Avatar franchise leaned heavily on international markets to sustain momentum. However, Monday collections showed a sharper-than-expected decline, preventing the film from crossing the $400 million milestone within its first four days.
The film opened with $88 million domestically and achieved a strong worldwide total of $347 million over its opening weekend. On Monday, domestic earnings dropped to $13 million, marking a significant 45 percent fall compared to Sunday. This dip meant the film only just managed to pass the $100 million mark in North America.
Overseas markets contributed an additional $39 million on Monday, taking international earnings to approximately $296 million. By the end of day four, Avatar Fire and Ash had accumulated around $398.7 million globally. While this positions it as the third-largest opening of the year behind Zootopia 2 and Wicked For Good, the performance is notably weaker when compared to earlier Avatar releases. Avatar The Way of Water had already crossed $500 million worldwide within the same timeframe, placing Fire and Ash more than 25 percent behind that benchmark.
Despite the slower pace, the franchise remains one of cinema’s most successful. The film stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, returning as parents fighting to protect their family and world, with Oona Chaplin introduced as a new antagonist. The original Avatar released in 2009 went on to earn $2.9 billion globally, while The Way of Water followed with $2.3 billion. James Cameron has already confirmed that the fourth and fifth Avatar films are scheduled for release in 2029 and 2031, keeping the long-term future of Pandora firmly in focus.
