Chasing a target of 233 runs, South Africa found themselves struggling at 78 for 5, as Bangladesh’s spinners dominated the middle overs with tight bowling and sharp turn. However, a brilliant rescue act from Nadine de Klerk, who once again proved to be South Africa’s match-winner, guided her team home with calm determination under immense pressure.
Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana praised her young side’s spirit and fight, despite the emotional scenes in the dressing room after the gut-wrenching loss. “I’m really proud of how my girls fought till the very last ball. They gave 110 percent, and even though they are young, they believed they could win. It’s a great learning experience for us,” she said after the match.
Missed chances proved costly for Bangladesh. Dropped catches, including key chances of Chloe Tryon, who anchored a crucial 85-run partnership with Marizanne Kapp (56), and later de Klerk, who was dropped on 26, shifted the momentum in South Africa’s favor.
Reflecting on the performance, Sultana added, “We have been in similar positions before, like the game against England, where we started strong but couldn’t finish it off. The girls showed great courage, and we’ll learn from this experience. We still have three more games to go, and we’ll keep our heads high.”
Despite the defeat, Bangladesh earned immense praise for their discipline, passion, and ability to push one of the top-ranked teams to the final over. Their next challenge will be against Australia on October 16, where they’ll look to bounce back stronger.
