BCCI Confirms Shubman Gill Ruled Out of First Test After Sudden Neck Spasm in Kolkata

Date:

India captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the remainder of the first Test against South Africa at the Eden Gardens after leaving the field with severe neck discomfort during India’s innings. The incident took place on Day 2 when Gill faced only three deliveries before showing visible pain while executing a sweep shot that went for four. He immediately clutched the back of his neck prompting medical attention on the field.

According to the update released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India before the start of play on Day 3 the 26 year old was taken to the hospital for scans and remains under observation. The medical team continues to monitor his condition and confirmed that he will not return to participate further in the match. Gill was later seen being moved on a stretcher for detailed evaluation emphasising the seriousness of the injury.

Gill’s recent workload has been considerable with continuous commitments since early 2025. His schedule has included the Champions Trophy the IPL five Tests against England the Asia Cup a series against the West Indies three ODIs and multiple T20Is against Australia. His rising responsibilities as an all format leader have already sparked discussions about player workload management for long term sustainability.

India were bowled out for 189 in their first innings managing a slender 30 run lead in Gill’s absence. The team will now continue the remainder of the Test without their captain as recovery remains the priority.
