Best Time to Drink Green Tea: Dietitian Shares Why Timing Is Key for Maximum Health Benefits

Green tea is known for supporting better digestion clearer skin and overall wellness but a leading dietitian explains that drinking it at the wrong time may reduce its effectiveness. Many people enjoy green tea for its calming effect and antioxidant-rich profile which can help reduce stress support skin repair and protect the body from inflammation. However Shalini Arvind Chief Dietitian at Fortis Hospital explains that timing plays a major role in how well the body absorbs the beneficial compounds found in green tea including catechins and mild caffeine.

According to the expert drinking green tea on an empty stomach may lead to acidity or discomfort for some while consuming it too close to bedtime may affect sleep because of its caffeine content. Excessive intake or poor timing can also interfere with the absorption of nutrients such as iron due to the tannins present in the tea. Signs of poor timing include bloating restlessness headaches or jitteriness.

Green tea offers several benefits such as protecting cells from oxidative stress supporting liver detoxification and helping maintain redox balance. Research published on PubMed also suggests that green tea’s EGCG compounds may fight inflammation reduce fat accumulation in the liver and support metabolic health. Its polyphenols may also protect the skin from UV damage improve DNA repair and reduce aging-related inflammation.

Experts suggest drinking green tea between meals or before eating to maximize EGCG absorption rather than having it along with food. A 2019 PubMed study found that consuming catechin-rich green tea in the evening may even help reduce post-meal glucose spikes showing that timing influences the detox and metabolic benefits. However individuals with acidity anemia or highly sensitive stomachs should be cautious. High-dose green tea extracts have been linked to rare but serious issues such as liver stress nervous system stimulation and cardiovascular concerns highlighting the importance of moderation.
