Cardiologist Reveals 7 Everyday Foods That May Clog Arteries and Increase Heart Attack Risk

Many people do not realize that the foods they eat daily may slowly damage their arteries and raise the risk of heart disease. Heart attacks and strokes remain leading causes of death across the world, yet a significant share of these cases is preventable with healthier lifestyle choices. Experts warn that high intake of salt sugar unhealthy fats and processed foods can gradually narrow the arteries that supply oxygen-rich blood to vital organs.

According to global health organizations poor dietary habits tobacco use physical inactivity excessive alcohol and chronic stress accelerate the formation of plaque inside the arteries. Dr Mahadev Swamy B Consultant – Interventional Cardiology at SPARSH Hospital explains that certain commonly consumed foods can directly contribute to inflammation and fatty buildup increasing the risk of dangerous artery blockages.

What Happens When Arteries Become Blocked?

Arteries transport oxygenated blood throughout the body. But when their inner walls are damaged—due to high blood pressure smoking poor diet or inflammatory conditions—fatty deposits start accumulating. Over time these deposits harden into plaque creating a condition called atherosclerosis. This buildup restricts blood flow and can trigger heart attacks or strokes. Dr Swamy notes that consistent unhealthy eating only speeds up this process.

7 Foods That May Increase the Risk of Blocked Arteries

1. Deep-fried foods
Items like pakoras samosas fries and fried chicken contain trans fats and repeatedly heated oils. These increase bad cholesterol promote inflammation and speed up plaque formation. Regular intake can significantly raise heart attack risk.

2. Processed meats
Sausages bacon salami and similar products are high in sodium saturated fats and chemical additives. Research links them to higher cholesterol arterial stiffness and increased risk of coronary artery disease even when consumed in small quantities.

3. Refined carbohydrates and sugary items
White bread pastries sweets and sugary beverages spike blood sugar levels. This raises triglycerides increases fat deposits around arteries and heightens the risk of diabetes which further contributes to heart disease.

4. Packaged snacks high in trans fats
Chips bakery snacks namkeens and ultra-processed foods often contain hydrogenated oils. These raise LDL and reduce HDL cholesterol making the arteries narrow faster.

5. Extremely salty foods
Instant noodles packaged soups pickles fast food and many restaurant dishes contain excess sodium. High salt intake elevates blood pressure damages artery walls and increases plaque buildup.

6. Large amounts of red meat
Frequent eating of beef mutton or lamb increases saturated fat intake and harmful cholesterol levels. Studies also show red meat raises TMAO a compound linked to arterial plaque formation. Experts recommend moderation.

7. Artificially sweetened beverages
Diet sodas can disrupt metabolism and increase cravings while energy drinks may boost blood pressure and heart rate. Regular consumption increases long-term cardiovascular strain.

Dr Swamy highlights that replacing unhealthy foods with fruits vegetables whole grains nuts seeds and lean proteins alongside regular physical activity can greatly reduce heart attack risk.
