Channing Tatum Stars in ‘Roofman’: Escaped Criminal Hides in Toy Store in New True-Crime Film Trailer

Date:

Paramount Pictures has dropped the official trailer for Roofman, an upcoming crime drama inspired by the real-life story of Jeffrey Manchester. Starring Channing Tatum in the lead role, the film delves into the bizarre and emotional journey of a former Army Ranger turned serial robber, who lived secretly inside a Toys ‘R’ Us store after escaping prison.

The movie portrays the six-month period in 2004 during which Manchester assumed the alias “John Zorn” and integrated himself into a quiet North Carolina community. Best known for his peculiar method of robbing over 60 McDonald’s restaurants by cutting through their rooftops, he earned the nickname “Roofman.” As he begins a new life hidden in a toy store, he falls for a single mother played by Kirsten Dunst, complicating his attempts to escape his past.

Tatum, who also serves as executive producer, shared that playing a real person brought immense pressure and emotional complexity. He described Jeffrey Manchester as a “beautiful and unfortunate soul,” whose intelligence and vulnerability stood out despite his criminal acts. The actor acknowledged the challenges of encapsulating a real-life story within the scope of a feature film but expressed hope that the character would resonate deeply with audiences.

Kirsten Dunst joins Tatum as Leigh Wainscott, the divorced mother unaware of the fugitive’s identity. The cast also includes Ben Mendelsohn, LaKeith Stanfield, Juno Temple, Melonie Diaz, Uzo Aduba, Lily Collias, and Jimmy O. Yang. Directed by Derek Cianfrance and co-written with Kirk Gunn, Roofman explores themes of redemption, identity, and the emotional aftermath of crime.

Produced by Lynette Howell Taylor, Jamie Patricof, and Duncan Montgomery, and developed in partnership with Miramax, FilmNation Entertainment, and Von Waaden Entertainment, Roofman offers a gripping narrative grounded in true events. The release date is yet to be confirmed, but with a star-studded cast and a real-life story that borders on unbelievable, the film is already generating significant buzz.
