Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr is once again at the centre of controversy following his behaviour during El Clasico against Barcelona. The Brazilian winger’s reaction to being substituted by coach Xabi Alonso has sparked criticism, with former France international Christophe Dugarry calling him “unbearable” and accusing him of arrogance and immaturity.
During the high-voltage encounter, Vinicius was taken off in the 71st minute and replaced by Rodrygo. Clearly frustrated, the forward stormed off the pitch, heading straight down the tunnel instead of joining his teammates on the bench — a gesture that didn’t go unnoticed by fans and pundits alike.
Dugarry, speaking on RMC Sport, compared Vinicius to Kylian Mbappé, praising the Frenchman’s professionalism while criticising Vinicius for his attitude. “I loved Mbappe’s game, I loved his behaviour — unlike Vinicius, who is unbearable. He’s always complaining, always arguing with referees and opponents, and when he finally performs well after several poor matches, he overreacts as if he’s conquered the world. He’s unbearable now; he even insults his coach,” Dugarry said.
The outspoken pundit didn’t stop there. He accused the Real Madrid forward of lacking self-awareness and professionalism, urging him to take responsibility for his inconsistent performances instead of blaming others. “If the coach doesn’t play you, maybe it’s because your performances aren’t good enough. Instead of insulting your coach, prove your worth on the field,” Dugarry added.
Dugarry further suggested that Vinicius’ recent form doesn’t reflect the potential that once made him a rising star at the Bernabéu. “He’s far from his best level. He whines constantly, he’s always seeking attention. If he continues like this, even Florentino Pérez might decide to move him on,” Dugarry warned.
Once hailed as the heartbeat of Real Madrid’s attack, Vinicius now faces growing scrutiny as Mbappé’s dominance overshadows him. Critics believe that to reclaim his place as one of the best, Vinicius must mature, stay disciplined, and refocus his energy on football rather than emotional outbursts.
