Christopher Nolan has shared a surprising chapter from his early Hollywood journey, explaining how missing out on directing Troy eventually placed him on the path to creating Batman Begins. In a recent conversation with Empire Magazine, Nolan recalled that Warner Bros. first approached him to helm Troy more than two decades ago—long before he envisioned redefining Gotham City on the big screen.
According to Nolan, he was hired when Wolfgang Petersen briefly stepped away from the project. The world of ancient epics fascinated him, and he had clear ideas about how he wanted to portray iconic moments like the Trojan Horse. But the opportunity vanished just as quickly. When Petersen’s superhero project Batman vs. Superman was shelved, he returned to reclaim Troy, leaving Nolan without a film.
Warner Bros. then offered Nolan what he jokingly called a “consolation prize”: Batman Begins. That “consolation” ultimately launched a trilogy that transformed modern superhero cinema and cemented Nolan as one of the industry’s most influential filmmakers.
When Troy eventually debuted in 2004 with a star-studded cast led by Brad Pitt, Eric Bana and Diane Kruger, critics were divided but global audiences turned it into a box-office success approaching $500 million. A year later, Nolan’s Batman Begins arrived and reset the studio’s entire superhero direction.
Now, after decades, Nolan is finally returning to the mythological world he once hoped to explore. His upcoming film The Odyssey features Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus and an ensemble that includes Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron. Nolan says he was drawn back to the story because Hollywood has never delivered a grand-scale, IMAX-driven adaptation of Homer’s classic that carries true cinematic weight.
The Odyssey is set for release on July 17, 2026, marking Nolan’s long-awaited re-entry into ancient epic storytelling.
