Colin Farrell Stars as Lord Doyle in Netflix’s Ballad of a Small Player Trailer – A Macau Casino Thriller Set for October Release

Date:

Netflix has unveiled the first official trailer for Ballad of a Small Player, a psychological thriller directed by Academy Award nominee Edward Berger. The film, adapted from Lawrence Osborne’s novel, follows Colin Farrell as Lord Doyle, a gambler navigating the high-stakes world of Macau casinos while battling inner demons, debts, and a haunting past.

The trailer introduces Doyle in a sharp suit as he indulges in late-night gambling under the neon lights of Macau. Initially appearing to be on a winning streak, his life quickly spirals into chaos marked by rooftop jumps, alcohol-fueled breakdowns, bursts of anger, and an overwhelming sense of regret.

Along his turbulent journey, Doyle encounters Dao Ming (Fala Chen), a casino worker whose presence may provide him a chance at redemption. However, Cynthia Blithe (Tilda Swinton), a determined private investigator, is closing in on him, forcing Doyle to face the very truths he is trying to escape. The supporting cast also features Alex Jennings and Deanie Ip, adding further depth to the story’s themes of desperation, intrigue, and redemption.

The film is penned by screenwriter Rowan Joffe, best known for 28 Weeks Later. Berger reunites with his All Quiet on the Western Front crew, including Oscar-winning cinematographer James Friend, production designer Jonathan Houlding, editor Nick Emerson, costume designer Lisy Christl, and composer Volker Bertelmann.

Berger, who achieved critical acclaim and multiple Academy Awards for All Quiet on the Western Front and later directed Conclave, shifts focus to a more personal yet gripping narrative set against the backdrop of Macau’s dazzling casinos.

For Colin Farrell, this project adds to an impressive run of roles. Recently nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of Oz Cobb in HBO Max’s The Penguin, Farrell showcases his versatility once again by bringing Doyle’s vulnerability and raw edge to life.

The movie will premiere at the Toronto International Picture Festival in September, followed by a screening at the Zurich Film Festival, where Farrell will receive the Golden Icon Award. According to Netflix’s schedule, Ballad of a Small Player will hit US theaters on October 15, followed by releases in the UK and Ireland on October 17, before streaming worldwide from October 29.
