Cristiano Ronaldo Built an Empire While Kylian Mbappé Faces a Test: Real Madrid’s Work Still in Progress

Date:

Kylian Mbappé arrived at Real Madrid carrying the weight of history and expectation, with comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo inevitable from the very first moment. While the French superstar has steadily found his scoring touch and confidence in front of goal, the reality around him is very different from the environment Ronaldo once enjoyed at the Santiago Bernabéu. Mbappé is shining individually, but the collective structure around him remains incomplete.

After an uneven start to life in Madrid that saw him adapt to a central striker role, Mbappé has now emerged as the focal point of the attack. His goal output has surged, even matching Ronaldo’s iconic tally of 59 goals in a calendar year, a remarkable achievement that underlines his elite status. Yet milestones alone cannot mask the broader concerns surrounding Madrid’s setup. Unlike Ronaldo, who walked into a club ready to be rebuilt entirely around him, Mbappé has joined a team still searching for its next dominant identity.

When Ronaldo arrived, Real Madrid invested aggressively to support him. Creative forces like Mesut Özil and Ángel Di María supplied chances, while Karim Benzema and later Gareth Bale completed a fearsome frontline. Behind them, Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić controlled matches and defined an era. That clear blueprint transformed Madrid into a European powerhouse, delivering unprecedented Champions League success.

Mbappé’s situation tells a different story. Last season ended without silverware, with Madrid falling short domestically and in Europe. While Mbappé gradually adapted and improved, inconsistency from Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo left him carrying the attacking load too often. This season has shown flashes of promise, but Madrid remain a step behind Barcelona in La Liga and unconvincing in the Champions League.

The midfield transition has further complicated matters. Jude Bellingham and Federico Valverde bring energy and goals, but neither offers the calm orchestration once provided by Kroos and Modrić. Without a true playmaker dictating tempo, Madrid’s attacks can appear disjointed, forcing Mbappé to create moments largely on his own. This lack of control exposes a tactical gap that continues to hold the team back.

Speculation around Xabi Alonso’s future may dominate headlines, but the real decision lies with Madrid’s long-term vision. If Mbappé is to be the cornerstone of the next era, the club must commit fully by reshaping the squad around his strengths. That could mean redefining roles, making tough transfer decisions and restoring the ruthless clarity that once powered Ronaldo’s reign. Until then, Mbappé’s brilliance will continue to raise questions about a project that remains unfinished.
