Cristiano Ronaldo Cleared to Play in 2026 World Cup Opener After FIFA Issues One-Year Probation

Date:

Cristiano Ronaldo will remain eligible for Portugal’s first two matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after football’s governing body issued a one-year probation instead of enforcing a full suspension. The decision came after Ronaldo received the first red card of his international career during Portugal’s 2–0 defeat to the Republic of Ireland on November 13.

The 40-year-old forward was initially shown a yellow card for elbowing Ireland defender Dara O’Shea, but the decision was upgraded to a red card following a Video Assistant Referee review. FIFA later announced a three-match suspension, though two of those matches have been postponed for a probation period lasting one year.

According to FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee, the remaining two matches of the ban will only be enforced if Ronaldo commits a similar offense within the next year. If that happens, the suspended games will be activated immediately during Portugal’s next official fixtures. Ronaldo has the right to appeal the ruling, although he has already served his automatic one-match suspension when Portugal faced Armenia on November 16.

Tuesday’s ruling means the legendary forward is still on track to participate in his sixth World Cup, further extending his record for the most appearances by a male footballer. Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez defended his captain after the Ireland match, stating that Ronaldo’s intent was misjudged and calling the decision to send him off “harsh” given his exemplary disciplinary history.

Ronaldo’s unprecedented run of national team appearances now stands at 226 games, and the latest decision ensures he can continue leading Portugal as the team prepares for next year’s global tournament.
