Cristiano Ronaldo Sets New World Cup Qualifier Record with Brace but Portugal Held to Late Hungary Equalizer

Date:

Cristiano Ronaldo once again proved age is just a number as he netted a stunning brace for Portugal in their FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Hungary, though a dramatic injury-time goal from Dominik Szoboszlai saw the match end in a 2-2 draw at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon.

The 40-year-old icon scored twice in the first half — the 947th and 948th goals of his illustrious career — breaking yet another world record by becoming the top scorer in FIFA World Cup Qualifier history with 41 goals. Ronaldo surpassed Carlos Ruiz’s previous record of 39, further extending his lead over Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski.

Ronaldo’s Record-Breaking Night in Lisbon

Hungary took an early lead in the 8th minute when Attila Szalai headed home from a Szoboszlai corner, but Ronaldo struck back in the 22nd minute. A sharp low cross from Nelson Semedo found the Al Nassr forward, who calmly slotted the ball home.

Just before halftime, Ronaldo added his second with a stunning left-footed volley from a Nuno Mendes delivery, giving Portugal a 2-1 advantage. His clinical finishing once again showcased why he remains one of football’s greatest goal-scorers.

Portugal Dominant but Denied Victory

In the second half, Portugal continued to press for a third goal. Ruben Dias and Bruno Fernandes both hit the post, while Hungary’s goalkeeper Balazs Toth produced multiple key saves, including a superb stop to deny Joao Felix from close range.

However, Portugal’s missed chances came back to haunt them. In the 91st minute, a defensive lapse allowed Szoboszlai to sneak in and slot home a dramatic equalizer for Hungary, earning them a crucial point.

Despite the draw, Portugal remain top of their qualification group, holding a five-point lead over second place, while Hungary stay in contention for the playoff spot.

With his brace, Ronaldo not only extended his record as international football’s all-time leading scorer (143 goals) but also reminded fans that even at 40, he continues to chase greatness.
