Cristiano Ronaldo’s Absence at Diogo Jota’s Funeral Explained by Portugal FA President Amid Public Criticism

Date:

Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to miss the funeral of fellow Portugal footballer Diogo Jota has sparked widespread debate. However, the Portuguese Football Federation has come forward in strong support of the national team captain, explaining that his absence was out of respect, not indifference.

Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in a fatal car accident on July 3 alongside his brother Andre Silva, was mourned by family, friends, and teammates at an emotional service in his hometown of Gondomar. Several stars, including Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias, and even Virgil van Dijk, attended the funeral.

The absence of Cristiano Ronaldo was a point of public attention, but Portugal FA president Pedro Proenca clarified the reasoning behind it. Proenca said that Ronaldo chose not to attend to avoid drawing unwanted attention and overshadowing the mourning of Jota’s family. “From the very beginning, Cristiano was fully involved emotionally. It’s an immense injustice to suggest he distanced himself from this tragedy. He grieved deeply, in his own way, as a team-mate and friend,” he stated.

Ronaldo’s sister Katia Aveiro also defended him, drawing parallels to their own father’s funeral. She explained that immense media scrutiny and public spectacle often compound the grief, making privacy impossible. She emphasized that real support doesn’t require public gestures. “People today are obsessed with appearances and forget about real emotions. Society is sick with criticism and judgment. My brother chose dignity and silence over spectacle,” she added in a heartfelt statement.

The Portugal forward’s decision, though controversial in some circles, has now been reframed by those close to him as a deeply personal and respectful act—one intended to preserve the sanctity of the moment for Diogo Jota’s grieving family.
