Five time champions Chennai Super Kings have officially confirmed the signing of Australian fast bowler Spencer Johnson as a replacement for injured pacer Nathan Ellis for the upcoming Indian Premier League 2026 season.
The left arm pacer joins the squad for a reported fee of INR 1.5 crore, strengthening CSK’s pace attack ahead of the tournament. Johnson brings international experience, having represented Australia in both ODI and T20 formats, picking up 18 wickets across 13 matches.
Before joining CSK, Johnson had withdrawn from the Pakistan Super League 2026, where he was expected to play for Quetta Gladiators. His exit from the tournament was attributed to personal reasons, announced earlier this month.
Johnson is no stranger to the IPL, having previously featured for Gujarat Titans and Kolkata Knight Riders. His inclusion adds depth and versatility to the CSK bowling unit as they prepare for another competitive season.
The move also reflects a growing trend of international players opting out of PSL commitments in favour of IPL opportunities. Players like Blessing Muzarabani and Dasun Shanaka have similarly switched leagues after receiving IPL contracts.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board has expressed concerns over such decisions. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has indicated that regulatory action could be taken against players who withdraw from PSL commitments at short notice, referencing previous disciplinary measures taken in similar cases.
With both leagues scheduled close together, scheduling conflicts remain a key talking point. The PSL 2026 season is set to begin on March 26, just days before the IPL kicks off, intensifying competition for player availability.
As the IPL approaches, CSK fans will be eager to see how Johnson performs in yellow and whether he can make an immediate impact in place of the injured Ellis.
