Denzel Washington and Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest” Wins 92% on Rotten Tomatoes – Release Dates and Streaming Details

Date:

Denzel Washington reunites with visionary filmmaker Spike Lee for Highest 2 Lowest, a gripping modern reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 masterpiece High and Low, itself adapted from Ed McBain’s 1959 crime novel King’s Ransom. Set in present-day New York City, the crime drama follows David King (Washington), a powerful music mogul whose life spirals into chaos when his godson is kidnapped. Faced with a ransom that tests his morality, influence, and legacy, King navigates a tense and emotional crossroads.

The star-studded cast includes Ilfenesh Hadera, Jeffrey Wright, A$AP Rocky, and Ice Spice, bringing diverse talent and energy to the intense storyline.

Ahead of its theatrical debut on August 15, 2025, Highest 2 Lowest is already making waves with critics, holding a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 65 reviews and a Metascore of 75 from 25 critics. The score initially premiered at 91% before climbing to 92%, signaling strong positive reception.

Critics have praised the film for its emotional depth and visual storytelling. Lindsey Bahr from AP News highlighted the powerful synergy between Lee and Washington, while Barry Hertz of The Globe and Mail called it “a thing of high art.” Nick Schager from The Daily Beast noted that Washington’s performances under Lee’s direction are unmatched, and Peter Debruge from Variety credited Lee with taking High and Low to “new heights.”

Though some reviewers felt it leaned slightly toward fan service, the overall consensus celebrates it as a tense, well-acted thriller.

This marks the fifth collaboration between Washington and Lee, following Mo’ Better Blues (1990), Malcolm X (1992), He Got Game (1998), and Inside Man (2006), continuing a partnership known for delivering impactful cinema.

For those wanting more of Washington’s finest work, his top-rated films include Glory (1989) at 95%, The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021) at 93%, Fences (2016) at 92%, Devil in a Blue Dress (1995) at 92%, and Mississippi Masala (1991) at 92%.

Highest 2 Lowest will premiere in US theaters on August 15, 2025, and will be available to stream on Apple TV+ starting September 5, 2025.
