Dessert-Style Breakfast Packed With Protein: UK Surgeon Shares Gut-Friendly Pregnancy Morning Recipe

Date:

A breakfast that tastes like dessert while supporting digestion and pregnancy nutrition is gaining attention after a UK surgeon shared a simple yet nourishing morning bowl he prepares at home. Designed to be gentle on the gut while delivering impressive nutrition, this comforting recipe delivers 19 grams of protein and 14 grams of fibre using just five everyday ingredients.

Shared by Dr Karan Rajan, a UK-based surgeon and health educator, the breakfast is specifically crafted to support gut health during pregnancy, when hormonal shifts and physical changes can slow digestion and affect the microbiome. The recipe requires minimal preparation and no cooking beyond lightly stewing an apple, making it an easy and satisfying way to start the day.

According to Dr Rajan, pregnancy increases the body’s need for both protein and soluble fibre. Fibre helps counter sluggish gut movement caused by hormonal changes, while protein supports increased energy demands and fetal development. His dessert-like breakfast balances both while remaining gentle and easy to digest.

The recipe includes rolled oats, cinnamon, nuts, stewed apple and hemp seeds. Rolled oats provide beta-glucan soluble fibre that supports blood sugar balance and gut fermentation. Cinnamon adds polyphenols that gut bacteria convert into anti-inflammatory compounds. Pistachios or walnuts contribute fibre, protein and plant compounds that support microbiome diversity.

The stewed apple plays a key role in digestive comfort. Gentle cooking alters apple pectin, making it easier for gut bacteria to ferment and produce beneficial short-chain fatty acids like butyrate. Hemp seeds add texture, omega-3 fats, fibre and a substantial protein boost, supporting placental health and fetal brain development.

With no refined sugar and naturally sweet flavours, this breakfast satisfies sweet cravings without guilt. Its simplicity, nutritional balance and digestive benefits make it suitable not only for pregnancy but also for anyone seeking a gut-friendly high-protein morning meal.
