Dhruv Jurel’s red-ball brilliance puts him in strong contention for South Africa Test opener

Date:

Dhruv Jurel’s remarkable run of form in the longer format has placed him firmly in the spotlight ahead of India’s first Test against South Africa in Kolkata next week. With consistent big scores for India A, including twin centuries in the recent four-day matches against South Africa A, the young batter has become a major selection contender. Although Rishabh Pant is returning to the side as the main wicketkeeper and vice-captain, Jurel’s current purple patch makes it difficult for head coach Gautam Gambhir and the team management to overlook him.

Since the beginning of India’s home season, Jurel has delivered standout performances: 140, 1 & 56, 125, 44 & 6, followed by 132 and an unbeaten 127. In his last eight first-class innings, he has notched up three hundreds, a half-century and several crucial contributions, proving his hunger and match-winning ability in red-ball cricket.

With Pant set to take the gloves, Jurel is being considered purely as a specialist batter. Reports suggest that Sai Sudharsan — who has recently developed into a stable No. 3 option — is unlikely to be dropped, which leaves all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy as the most probable omission. Reddy has bowled little in recent home Tests and the turning conditions in India reduce the need for his seam-bowling skills.

The management may also look at Devdutt Padikkal as another batting option later in the series, but for now the pressure is on Reddy as Jurel pushes for a middle-order place. Gambhir has publicly supported giving Reddy opportunities to grow as a rare seam-bowling all-rounder in Indian cricket, yet current form may force a rethink.

If selected, this could mark a rare moment in Indian Test history — playing two specialist wicketkeepers in the same XI. The last time such a scenario unfolded was in 1986, featuring Kiran More and Chandrakant Pandit. Jurel’s surge has revived that possibility nearly four decades later, showing just how hard he has pushed his case with dominant batting performances.

India’s opening Test against South Africa now carries an intriguing selection battle: form versus long-term development. And at the moment, Dhruv Jurel’s performances seem too influential to ignore.
