The selection debate around Arshdeep Singh has intensified after India opted to bench their leading T20I wicket-taker in the washed-out series opener against Australia. According to former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik, the team management is likely to retain the same combination for the second T20I, meaning Arshdeep may once again miss out.
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Karthik explained that with Nitish Kumar Reddy unavailable for the first three matches due to injury, India appear focused on strengthening their batting depth by picking Harshit Rana at No. 8. The strategy aims to add lower-order runs, even if it leaves out India’s most successful T20I bowler in recent years.
Despite crossing 100 T20I wickets, Arshdeep has struggled to hold his place in the playing XI. During India’s recent Asia Cup campaign, he featured only in games where Jasprit Bumrah was rested, raising questions about his long-term role in the side.
Karthik was straightforward when asked whether the left-arm pacer could return for the second match:
“No. I don’t think they will make any changes… they want batting insurance with Harshit Rana at No. 8.”
He also feels Australia will stick with their unchanged lineup, especially after strong individual performances in the earlier matches. Dropping players despite success, he noted, can disrupt morale and create unnecessary uncertainty.
As India look to settle their best XI before major tournaments ahead, the choice between bowling strength and batting depth continues to be a crucial balancing act — and Arshdeep Singh remains at the center of that conversation.
