Djokovic Rolls Back the Years to Beat Sinner and Book Australian Open Final Clash with Alcaraz

Date:

Novak Djokovic once again reminded the tennis world why age is just a number as he produced a stunning comeback to defeat defending champion Jannik Sinner in the men’s singles semi-final of the 2026 Australian Open. The 38-year-old Serbian battled through a demanding five-set encounter at Rod Laver Arena to secure a place in the final, where he will face Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.

In a match that showcased endurance, mental strength, and elite-level shot-making, Djokovic overcame the 24-year-old Italian 3-6 6-3 4-6 6-4 6-4. The victory keeps alive his pursuit of an unprecedented 11th Australian Open title and a record-extending 25th Grand Slam crown. Despite being pushed to the limit by a younger and in-form opponent, Djokovic leaned on his experience and trademark resilience to prevail when it mattered most.

Sinner made an impressive start, dictating play early and taking the opening set with confidence. Djokovic responded by raising his level in the second set, rediscovering his rhythm and leveling the contest. The Italian then regained control in the third set, using his power and precision to move within one set of the final. With the pressure mounting, Djokovic refused to fade, digging deep in the fourth set to turn the tide once again and force a deciding fifth.

The final set was a test of nerve and stamina. Both players traded long rallies and crucial holds, but Djokovic’s composure in key moments proved decisive. Drawing on years of experience on Melbourne’s courts, he edged ahead late in the set and closed out the match to the delight of the crowd.

This win sends Djokovic into his 11th Australian Open final, ending a run of four consecutive Grand Slam semi-final exits. His opponent, Carlos Alcaraz, will be contesting his first Australian Open final and has the chance to become the youngest male player to complete a career Grand Slam. Djokovic, already a ten-time champion at Melbourne Park, acknowledged after the match that he felt fortunate to reach this stage and admitted he entered the semi-final as the underdog against Sinner.
