Doctor Reveals Why Pregnancy and Childbirth Increase the Risk of Piles and Why Early Care Matters

Date:

Pregnancy and childbirth are transformative experiences, yet many women continue to struggle with physical discomfort long after delivery. One commonly overlooked condition is piles, also known as hemorrhoids, which can cause pain bleeding and swelling during bowel movements. These symptoms are often ignored or considered a normal part of pregnancy and postpartum recovery even though timely medical attention can prevent long-term complications.

According to Dr Pankaj Sharma Director of Robotic Bariatric Laparoscopic and General Surgery at Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh pregnancy-related piles are far more common than most women realise. Hormonal changes during pregnancy especially increased progesterone slow bowel movements and lead to constipation which is one of the main triggers for piles. At the same time the growing uterus puts pressure on pelvic muscles and rectal veins restricting blood flow and causing veins to swell.

Childbirth further increases the risk particularly during vaginal delivery when intense straining places sudden pressure on rectal veins. After delivery lifestyle changes such as irregular meals dehydration lack of sleep and fear of painful bowel movements often worsen constipation. Many women suppress the urge to pass stools which increases strain and leads to a cycle where piles become more severe over time.

Dr Sharma highlights that piles which begin mildly during pregnancy can worsen significantly after childbirth if ignored. Bleeding during bowel movements should never be dismissed as a routine post-pregnancy issue. When addressed early piles can usually be managed through diet hydration stool softeners and medication. Delayed treatment however can lead to chronic discomfort and may require surgical or laser-based procedures.

Advances in minimally invasive treatments now offer effective relief with minimal pain and faster recovery. However early diagnosis remains the key to avoiding prolonged suffering. Open conversations awareness and timely medical guidance can help women recover comfortably and focus on motherhood without persistent pain.
