Doctor Warns Frequent Gel Manicures Using LED Lamps May Increase Skin Damage Risk

Date:

Regular gel manicures may keep nails polished and attractive, but medical experts are raising concerns about the long-term effects of repeated exposure to curing lamps. A US-based physician has highlighted that even LED manicure lamps, often considered safer than traditional UV lamps, still expose the skin to UVA radiation which can gradually harm skin health.

According to medical insights shared online, gel manicure curing lamps emit UVA rays that penetrate deep into the skin layers. Although LED lamps produce lower radiation compared to older UV-based models, consistent exposure over time can still contribute to premature skin ageing and increase the potential risk of skin cancer. UVA radiation is known to create reactive oxygen species that can damage DNA and skin cells when exposure builds up over months or years.

The physician explained that occasional gel manicures usually carry minimal risk. However, individuals who frequently schedule weekly or regular manicure sessions may experience cumulative UVA exposure. Areas most affected include the backs of the hands fingers and nail beds as these regions remain directly under the curing lamps during treatments. People with fair skin previous heavy sun exposure or a family history of skin cancer may be more vulnerable to long-term damage.

Experts recommend taking preventive steps to reduce risk while continuing to enjoy gel manicures. Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before appointments can help shield the skin from UVA rays. Wearing UV-protective gloves with exposed fingertips is another effective method to limit radiation exposure. Additionally, spacing out manicure sessions instead of scheduling them frequently can significantly reduce cumulative skin damage over time.

While gel manicures remain popular for their durability and aesthetic appeal, medical professionals stress the importance of awareness and consistent skin protection to maintain long-term hand and skin health.
