Dubai is preparing for a major upgrade to its public transport network with the highly anticipated Blue Line project, designed to improve connectivity across key areas of the city. Spanning two separate routes — one approximately 21km long and the other around 9km — the new metro line will link the northeastern districts to the existing rail system, making daily travel faster and more efficient.
The project is expected to be completed by 2029, aligning with the 20-year milestone of the Dubai Metro. Once operational, the Blue Line is projected to serve nearly one million residents while significantly reducing road congestion by up to 20 percent.
The initiative was officially set in motion when His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum inaugurated the main tunnelling phase. A significant portion of the network — about 15.5km — will run underground, with one of the largest stations planned at Dubai International City 1.
The Blue Line will introduce 14 stations across rapidly growing neighborhoods and strategic locations. The first route begins at Al Jaddaf, connecting with the existing Green Line at Creek Station, providing seamless transfers for commuters. The second route starts at Al Rashidiya, currently known as Centrepoint Station on the Red Line, offering another major interchange point.
Among the key locations on the route is Academic City, a major educational hub expected to host over 50,000 students in the coming years. The metro will also pass through Al Warqa, a residential district that will benefit from improved accessibility and public transport options.
Dubai Creek Harbour is set to feature one of the most iconic stations on the line, designed to be the tallest metro station in the world. This landmark hub will accommodate tens of thousands of daily passengers and includes a large-scale infrastructure capable of handling high traffic volumes. A 1.3km viaduct will also be built to allow the train to cross Dubai Creek.
Dubai Festival City is another major stop along the longer route, providing direct metro access to one of the city’s largest shopping and residential areas. Meanwhile, the Blue Line will also establish a quicker connection to Dubai International Airport, reducing travel time to around 20 minutes for several communities.
Technology-focused zones like Dubai Silicon Oasis will also be connected, supporting future growth aligned with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. International City will see major improvements with three dedicated stations, including an underground interchange, boosting accessibility for residents and visitors to popular destinations like Dragon Mart.
Further along the route, Mirdif will gain direct metro access, linking suburban areas with the rest of the city. Ras Al Khor, known for its wildlife sanctuary and natural attractions, will also be included, enhancing travel options for both residents and tourists.
Overall, the Dubai Metro Blue Line represents a significant step forward in urban mobility, aiming to support population growth, reduce traffic, and provide faster connections between key districts and landmarks.
